NO BRANDING. NO MERCH. GIFT-BASED.
“Capitalist culture today shows a remarkable capacity to absorb and transform into commodities even its most radical critiques — turning the challenge into just another product to consume.”
This is a self-warning against the risk of my own project becoming what it criticizes. An ethical design constraint: this object can only succeed if it resists purely aesthetic consumption and the desire to profit from it or possess it because of its scarcity.
Rooted in a gift economy rather than a market economy, opposing the extractive logic of taking without reciprocity, of profiting by withholding. The gift economy works by the opposite principle: abundance is born from generosity, not accumulation.
“When art circulates as a gift, it retains its power. Works of art are gifts, not commodities.”
